Armenian authorities intend to start discussions with the shareholders of the "Syunik" airport in Kapan regarding the possibility of transforming it into an international one. The Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure clarified that the initiative is at its earliest stage: working consultations have not yet started, and the project parameters are still being formed.
According to the department, the required investment volume is currently undetermined. It may involve financing border and customs infrastructure, modernizing runways, and updating navigation and airfield equipment. All these issues are planned to be worked out during negotiations with the airport owners.
Previously, the development of the project was hindered by the terms of the concession agreement, which granted Corporación América the preferential right to manage any new international airport within a 250 km radius of "Zvartnots". After the cancellation of this clause, the discussion of the international status of Kapan airport became possible without transferring it to a concession. The shareholders of "Syunik Airport" LLC are the Zangezur Copper-Molybdenum Combine and the Syunik Region Development Fund, established by the Armenian government.
