Power Grids Under Scrutiny: Armenia Assesses the Market Ahead of Possible Nationalization

Pashinyan spoke about the future of Electric Networks of Armenia and the state's plans

In Yerevan, a process is underway to assess the market value of the company Electric Networks of Armenia (ENA), Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said. According to him, this will allow the state to decide whether to buy out the company or place it under trust management with a state stake, depending on the valuation obtained. Earlier, ENA's license for electricity distribution was revoked, and the government was given a three-month period to negotiate with the owner.

Pashinyan noted that valuations of ENA have not yet been officially finalized, and discussions are ongoing. He emphasized that there is no need to rush decisions: de facto, the company already belongs to the state, while its transparency, tax discipline, and operating efficiency have increased significantly. At the same time, corruption schemes involving the former management have been uncovered, and criminal cases are underway.

The prime minister also said that ENA has become more open to partnerships with a variety of companies and investors. If the market value proves affordable for the budget, full nationalization is planned, with management to be handed over to an international group of professionals, which should strengthen oversight and the transparency of the country's critically important energy infrastructure.
