The US to bring the atom of the future to Armenia: small reactors for $9 billion

Washington is ready to transfer rare nuclear technologies to Yerevan and launch large-scale energy projects

Armenia and the United States have reached the final stretch of an agreement on cooperation in the field of peaceful atom. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and US Vice President James D. Vance signed a joint statement on the completion of negotiations on the so-called 123 Agreement. According to the Armenian Prime Minister, the document is aimed at diversifying the country's energy sector and attracting safe and innovative technologies.

The key outcome of the agreement may be the supply of American small modular reactors to Armenia. James D. Vance said that we are talking about investments in the amount of about $9 billion: about $5 billion will be for the supply of equipment, and another $4 billion for long-term contracts for fuel and reactor maintenance. He stressed that the United States rarely transfers such technologies to other countries, which indicates a high level of trust.

According to the American side, the project will strengthen Armenia's energy stability and security, as well as create a significant number of jobs. Earlier, Vance noted that Armenia could become an important economic pillar of the region, and the development of energy could support long-term peace and ensure mutual prosperity of Armenia and the United States.
