Armenia sharply reduces tax on electric vehicles. Owners will be able to pay 2-3 times less

The new calculation mechanism should save drivers from overpayments due to confusion with the power of electric motors

The Armenian government has approved a new procedure for calculating property tax for electric vehicles. The decision was made on March 5 at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers following a proposal from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Armenia. The new system should eliminate problems with determining the power of electric motors and reduce the tax burden for owners of such transport.

Previously, difficulties often arose when importing electric vehicles: there were no identification plates on the cars or different power values were indicated — minimum and maximum. Due to this, uncertainty arose when calculating the tax, and owners sometimes paid more than they should have.

Now the power of the electric motor will be determined based on data from the database of electronic vehicle passports. If the information is not available there, a special mathematical formula will be used to calculate the indicators.

According to the head of the department, Arpine Sargsyan, the new system will significantly reduce payments. For example, for a 2025 electric vehicle with a capacity of 544 hp, the tax will decrease from approximately $1736 to $726. For models with a capacity of up to 218 hp, the amount will decrease from approximately $353 to $114.
