Armenia Discusses New Nuclear Power Plant with Russia

Authorities are exploring reactor options and cooperation with various countries

Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan met with Rosatom's First Deputy Director General Kirill Komarov, where the parties discussed current energy cooperation and projects being implemented in Armenia. Special attention was paid to energy security issues and the development of mutually beneficial cooperation in the industry.

During the negotiations, the prospects for expanding cooperation were also touched upon, including trade in energy resources in the region. Earlier, Rosatom head Alexey Likhachev offered the Armenian side a comprehensive partnership in the field of nuclear energy — from the construction of nuclear power plants of various capacities to the implementation of projects outside the nuclear industry.

According to the Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure David Khudatyan, the country's authorities have already decided that the new nuclear power plant will be of a modular type. The final choice of technology and partner is planned to be made in 2026–2027. Companies from Russia, the United States, China, South Korea and France are being considered among the possible participants in the project. In addition, the Armenian side is already studying a preliminary feasibility study for the construction of a 1200 MW power unit, prepared by Rosatom. ⚡
