Armenia is preparing a digital revolution: EU helps rewrite the rules for IT giants

New laws could change the internet, social networks and marketplaces in the near future

Armenia has begun to form its own system for regulating digital markets with the participation of the European Union. This was announced by the head of the Commission for the Protection of Competition and Consumer Interests, Gegham Gevorgyan. The future norms are based on the European DMA and DSA acts, which are already applied in the EU and set strict rules for large technology platforms.

According to the regulator, work is underway not only at the level of state structures. Private companies, as well as relevant departments — the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of High-Tech Industry — are connected to the process. In the near future, it is planned to move to an active phase of discussions with market participants in order to adapt the European experience to local conditions.

DMA is aimed at limiting the influence of the largest IT companies acting as "gatekeepers", while DSA regulates issues of content and user safety. It applies to social networks, marketplaces, search engines and video services. The authorities expect that the result of the work will be the creation of a full-fledged national system of rules for the digital economy.
