Armenian Nuclear Power Plant's operation may be extended until 2036

But there is a nuance with contractors

The issue of extending the service life of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant remains at the center of discussion. Currently, the plant is scheduled to operate until the fall of 2026, but preparations are already underway to extend its operation until 2031. At the same time, the Russian side believes that if a number of conditions are met, the facility can safely operate until 2036.

According to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk, a key factor is Rosatom's participation in the modernization of the plant. To provide safety guarantees, the share of work performed by the state corporation should be at least 70%.

At the same time, Yerevan is betting on attracting European contractors. This has drawn criticism from Russian specialists, who point to their lack of sufficient experience in seismically active regions and insufficient coordination with the general designer of the plant. As a result, the future of the project will depend not only on technical but also on political decisions.
