Armenia Introduces Energy Storage Licenses

The market awaits a new operating model

Armenia is preparing to launch a new category of licenses in the energy sector — for companies engaged in electricity storage. This was announced by the Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, David Khudatyan. The innovation will become part of the energy market reform and will allow for the official regulation of the activities of large storage systems.

The issuance of licenses will be handled by the Public Services Regulatory Commission of Armenia. Companies that receive permission will be able to accumulate electricity in certain territories, as well as buy and sell it on the wholesale market according to the current rules.

At the same time, the requirements will not apply to small installations: licenses will not be required for stations with a capacity of up to 1 MW, as well as larger systems, if they are used exclusively for their own needs. The new model should stimulate the development of energy storage technologies and increase the flexibility of the country's energy system.
