Armenia to Decide on a New Nuclear Power Plant by 2027: Authorities Are Preparing to Choose Reactor Unit Technology

At the same time, they plan to extend the operation of the current reactor until 2036

In Armenia, by the end of 2027, it is planned to complete the selection of technology for the construction of a new nuclear power unit. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated this while presenting the program of the Civil Contract party. According to him, by that time a final decision should be made and a memorandum of intent should be signed with the project's future partners.

This concerns the formation of the basis for the construction of a new nuclear power plant, including the determination of the technological solution and the project's potential participants. The authorities view this step as strategic for the country's long-term energy security.

At the same time, it is planned to extend the service life of Unit 2 of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant until 2036. Thus, the existing plant will continue to remain a key source of electricity in the country in the coming years while the transition to a new generation of nuclear power is being prepared.
