Armenia Uncovers Cyber Theft and Phone Fraud Scheme: Servers and Equipment Seized

The Ministry of Internal Affairs announced the operation of a group that masked international traffic and stole citizens' data

In Armenia, employees of the cybercrime department have identified an alleged organized group involved in large-scale cyber theft and illegal termination of phone calls. This was reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the republic.

According to the investigation, the participants of the scheme equipped a private house in Karbi village, Aragatsotn region, with specialized computer equipment and used software to carry out operations related to data theft and digital attacks. During a search conducted by court order, equipment, mobile devices, and other equipment that could be used in illegal activities were seized.

A separate direction of the scheme concerned illegal call termination (GSM fraud). According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the attackers used VoIP technologies, redirecting international traffic via the Internet to local networks, masking it as internal calls. The use of traffic mixing and artificial minute generation to generate income is also mentioned.

In addition, the investigation is considering the use of malicious software and artificial intelligence-based tools to gain access to citizens' accounts and steal funds. The proceeds, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, could be converted into cryptocurrency. Examinations and investigative actions are currently ongoing.
