The American engineering company Sargent & Lundy, in cooperation with Armenian authorities, has completed a preliminary feasibility study on the possible replacement of the existing Armenian NPP with small modular reactors (SMRs).
Following consultations in Yerevan, four most suitable American SMR technologies were identified that could be used in the conditions of Armenia's energy system. It is noted that further technical support and project development will be carried out taking into account the standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Earlier, it was reported that the US is considering the possibility of large-scale investments in the development of Armenia's nuclear energy, including potential financing of up to $9 billion and the supply of small modular reactors to replace existing capacities.
