A possible change in natural gas prices could affect the cost of electricity production in Armenia. This was stated by Mesrop Mesropyan, Chairman of the Public Services Regulatory Commission of Armenia, noting that a significant part of the country's electricity is generated at gas-fired power plants.
According to him, about 30-35% of electricity is produced through gas generation, so any fluctuations in fuel costs can directly affect final production costs. He emphasized that there are no official decisions yet on gas price increases, and current tariffs for the population will remain unchanged until at least early 2027.
Mesropyan also noted that the development of renewable energy is gradually reducing dependence on gas, but the process takes time. As potential alternative supply sources, he mentioned neighboring and regional sources, including Iran, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaijan, emphasizing that purchases will be made where infrastructure and conditions allow.
