Team Telecom's refusal of AzerTelecom infrastructure does not eliminate risks for Armenian internet traffic

Discussion of data transit between Armenia and Azerbaijan sparked controversy in the IT community

IT specialist Ruben Muradyan commented on the clarifications provided by Team Telecom Armenia regarding the agreement with the Azerbaijani operator AzerTelecom and internet traffic routing.

Earlier, the company explained that data exchange would be organized at the DWDM infrastructure level, meaning through a physical point-to-point communication channel. It was also noted that traffic transit could pass through this line, but the Armenian side does not plan to use Azerbaijan's infrastructure.

Muradyan stated that the wording about "not planning to use" does not exclude potential risks in the future. In his opinion, the mere existence of a technical possibility for transit is already a factor that requires evaluation from an information security perspective.

He noted that internet transit between countries has been developing for many years and can increase network resilience through backup routes, including bypassing lines through Georgia. However, the expert emphasized that such schemes do not negate potential threats when using foreign infrastructure.

He separately commented on arguments about parallels with civil aviation, stating that physical crossing of space does not mean the absence of digital risks, including possible cyber attacks and data interception.

The agreement between Telecom Armenia and AzerTelecom on internet traffic transit previously sparked active discussion among information security specialists and users.
