Armenia has performed its first remote robotic surgery: a surgeon from Belgium operated on a patient in Yerevan from a distance of over 3300 km.
The operation took place at the SlavMed medical center using the Toumai MT-1000 surgical robotic system and a stable high-speed internet connection. A patient with early-stage prostate cancer underwent robot-assisted radical prostatectomy – the removal of the prostate gland. The intervention was successful, without complications.
Professor Alexandre Mottrie, one of the leading specialists in urology, served as the remote surgeon.
For Armenian medicine, this marked a significant technological breakthrough. The development of remote surgery will allow patients to receive assistance from leading specialists from various countries without the need to travel abroad, which can reduce costs for treatment, flights, and accommodation.
