The Government of Armenia approved a report on the implementation of the program for repeated extension of the operational life of the second power unit of the Armenian NPP. The project aims to enhance the safety level of the plant and ensure its operation until 2036. The total funding for the program is estimated at $160 million.
Modernization work began in 2020, and the final program was approved by the government and the Nuclear Safety Regulatory Committee in 2023. In December of the same year, the Armenian NPP signed a framework agreement with Rusatom Service worth $57.5 million. In total, the program includes 103 activities, some of which are carried out by the Russian contractor, and some by the plant itself.
The main focus is on checking the condition of equipment, improving the reliability of accident and fire protection systems, eliminating identified deficiencies, and conducting safety analysis. Previously, for the first program to extend the operational life of the second unit in 2020–2025, Armenia allocated a budget loan of 63.2 billion drams to the plant. In July 2026, the government also approved a new loan of 20.1 billion drams to continue modernization.
