The old terminal of "Zvartnots" Airport in Armenia will be preserved. The authorities have abandoned the idea of removing the building from the list of historical and cultural monuments and now plan to integrate it into the future complex of the new terminal.
The main element that they promise to preserve will be the famous tower. Part of the surrounding building may be altered to connect the historical structure with modern infrastructure. The final architectural project has not yet been approved: the existing concept has received preliminary approval, but the final sketches are yet to be developed.
The architectural community advocates for the most careful reconstruction possible. Experts believe that the structure can be adapted to modern requirements and seismic resistance standards without demolition and radical changes to its external appearance.
Old "Zvartnots" is considered a significant monument of Armenian architecture and is known outside the country. Meanwhile, the airport's master plan has already been agreed upon by approximately 95%. After receiving the latest materials from the management company, it is intended to be put up for public discussion in the next 1–2 months.
