The Metsamor NPP has high strength and resistance to external influences, stated Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. According to her, this has been confirmed by numerous studies and stress tests.
The plant remains a system-forming element of Armenia's energy sector and provides about 30% of all electricity generated in the country. Zakharova emphasized that stable nuclear generation allows for the support of the republic's industry and technological development.
According to the Russian side, the closure of its own NPP will lead to an increase in Armenia's dependence on other states in the energy sector.
Zakharova also reminded that Russian and Armenian specialists are jointly working on another extension of the Metsamor NPP's operational life – until 2036.
