Armenia will select a partner for the construction of a new nuclear power plant based on specific project parameters. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the main criteria will be the most favorable conditions for the country – price, quality, and construction timeline. According to him, Yerevan does not rule out cooperation with Russia: the partner will be the one who presents the most attractive offer.
Pashinyan also noted that Armenia has the potential to achieve energy self-sufficiency. In particular, the country is actively developing solar energy. With the current NPP capacity of 400 MW, solar power generation has reached about 1200 MW in recent years. The Prime Minister named the development of green hydrogen and energy storage systems as the next direction.
At the same time, Armenia strives to avoid excessive dependence on one country, including in the energy sector. Pashinyan emphasized that the construction of a new NPP itself does not imply such dependence. According to him, even with the operation of the Metsamor NPP, Yerevan sought alternatives for maintenance and nuclear fuel supplies, and such options exist.
