Armenia Attracted $4 Billion for AI: World Bank Reveals What's Behind the Investment Boom

The country is becoming a hub for AI infrastructure in the region, but local businesses are still barely using their own technological developments.

Investments in artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure have boosted the inflow of foreign direct investment into Armenia and Georgia, according to an October report by the World Bank. Despite general restrictions on investment activity, capital continues to flow into energy, AI, digital projects, and industry.

As one of the key examples, analysts cite the Armenian project Firebird AI. In August, the first phase of a $4 billion data center for artificial intelligence, created jointly with Nvidia and the Armenian government, was opened. According to the World Bank, this is the largest facility of its kind in the region.

However, the development of the industry is accompanied by a noticeable contradiction. Armenian IT companies actively create AI solutions and export them abroad, but practically do not offer these products to local customers. Logistics and financial intermediation enterprises are also slow to adopt new technologies. For now, the use of artificial intelligence in these areas is mainly limited to individual use of GPT models, experts note.
