Rosatom notes a favorable reaction in Armenia to the proposal to build a new nuclear power unit. This was stated on October 16 by the head of the state corporation, Alexey Likhachev, commenting on the results of a meeting with the country's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. According to him, the discussion caused a noticeable public resonance, and contacts with the Armenian side indicate a positive perception of the Russian initiative.
Moscow proposes to build a gigawatt-class power unit with a VVER-1000 reactor in Armenia. As Likhachev noted, the project involves the shortest possible implementation time, as well as the possibility of additional support and optimization of construction. At the same time, the specific start dates for work and the final decision of the Armenian authorities are not specified in the message.
The Armenian Nuclear Power Plant, located near the city of Metsamor, approximately 30 km from Yerevan, remains the only nuclear power plant in the South Caucasus and one of the key sources of electricity for the republic. The plant's operating life has been extended until 2026, and work is currently underway to further extend it for another ten years. The construction of a new power unit should become an important issue for Armenia's long-term energy supply.
