The old building of Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan is planned to be reconstructed and reused for passenger service. Gevorg Torosyan, Chairman of the Civil Aviation Committee of Armenia, announced the intention to transform the historic building into an operational terminal while presenting the priorities of the agency's work. However, the start dates of construction work, their cost, and the estimated opening date have not yet been announced.
The Civil Aviation Committee also intends to facilitate the modernization of two airports in the country — Zvartnots in Yerevan and Shirak in Gyumri. Support for infrastructure renewal will be carried out within the agency's authority. Other details of the planned transformations have not yet been disclosed.
The historic Zvartnots terminal was officially opened on February 10, 1982. The building, with its distinctive circular architecture and central tower, is considered one of the most famous monuments of Armenian modernism. Its possible return to use as a passenger terminal will mark a new stage in the development of Yerevan's airport infrastructure.
