Russia has offered Armenia a nuclear power plant capable of providing the country with energy for decades

Rosatom is ready to build a large nuclear power plant with cheap electricity

Russia has offered Armenia a project for a high-capacity nuclear power plant that could fully cover the country's energy needs for decades to come. This was stated by Mikhail Kalugin, director of the fourth department of CIS countries at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to him, the Rosatom project is capable of providing Armenia with stable electricity supplies and lower tariffs for the population and businesses.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs believes that the launch of such a station would give a serious impetus to the country's industry due to cheap electricity. Kalugin also emphasized that Russia is ready to share technologies in the field of nuclear energy and digitalization with Armenia. According to him, cooperation can develop within integration associations, including the EAEU, CIS, and CSTO.

Armenia is currently considering various options for building a new nuclear power plant with the participation of partners from Russia, the USA, France, China, and South Korea. A preliminary feasibility study for the construction of a 1200 MW unit from Rosatom has already been prepared. At the same time, the Russian side previously stated its readiness to offer both large reactors and modular solutions with a capacity of 50 MW, from which stations of the required scale can be formed. The existing Armenian NPP near Metsamor remains the only nuclear power plant in the South Caucasus and provides up to 40% of the country's electricity generation.
