The Government of Armenia approved a report on the implementation of the program for the repeated extension of the operational life of the second power unit of the Armenian NPP. The project is aimed at increasing the safety level of the station and ensuring its operation until 2036. The total funding for the program is estimated at $160 million.
Modernization work began in 2020, and the final program was approved by the government and the Nuclear Safety Regulatory Committee in 2023. In December of the same year, the Armenian NPP concluded a framework agreement with Rusatom Service company worth $57.5 million. In total, the program includes 103 measures, some of which are carried out by the Russian contractor, and some by the station itself.
The main attention is paid to checking the condition of equipment, increasing the reliability of accident and fire protection systems, eliminating identified shortcomings, and conducting safety analysis. Earlier, for the first program to extend the operational life of the second unit in 2020–2025, Armenia allocated a budget loan of 63.2 billion drams to the station. In July 2026, the government also approved a new loan of 20.1 billion drams to continue modernization.
