Armenia plans to start construction of three new reservoirs, the projects of which have already been prepared, by the end of 2026. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Khachatryan at a government meeting.
The list of the first facilities includes the Kasakh reservoir with a design capacity of 10 million cubic meters, the Lichk reservoir in Syunik region with a volume of 4 million cubic meters, and the Yelpin reservoir with a volume of about 1 million cubic meters.
According to Khachatryan, the authorities are currently coordinating the necessary procedures with financing organizations. After these stages are completed, tenders will be announced for the selection of construction companies, and the work itself should start by the end of this year.
In addition, with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, agreements have been reached on the construction of two more facilities – the Artik and Astkhadzor reservoirs, each designed for approximately 1.5 million cubic meters of water.
The preparation of the Mastara reservoir project is also ongoing. In addition to the already approved facilities, the Armenian authorities are working on 12 more projects related to the construction of new reservoirs. After receiving the necessary conclusions, the amount of investment and further implementation stages will be determined.
The development of water infrastructure is one of the priority areas for Armenia, where new reservoirs should help increase the efficiency of water use and meet the needs of agriculture.
