Young participants from Armenia successfully performed at the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence, which took place on August 2–8 in Astana. The country was represented by two teams of four students – the maximum allowed composition.
In the team competition, the quartet from Vanadzor's special school with in-depth study of mathematics and natural sciences took 5th place among representatives from 120 countries. The Armenian team was only behind participants from New Zealand, Hong Kong, Puerto Rico, and Spain. In the individual competition, Aram Amirkhanyan and Razmik Yepremyan from the Artashes Shahinyan Special Physics and Mathematics School received bronze medals.
Three more schoolchildren – Artem Hovhannisyan and Gurgen Bayburdyan from Gyumri's "Photon" Lyceum, as well as David Ghazaryan from Vagharshapat's High School No. 5 – received honorable mentions.
The Olympiad included a home stage with three tasks, team challenges with simulation and the Galbot robot, as well as an individual tour of six artificial intelligence tasks.
The national team's composition was determined based on the results of the national selection, in which about 170 schoolchildren participated. Six of the eight representatives of Armenia underwent three years of training under the "Artificial Intelligence Generation" program, implemented by the relevant ministry and the Science and Technology Foundation of Armenia. This is the second consecutive year of Armenia's participation in IOAI. Last year in Beijing, Aram Amirkhanyan already won a bronze medal in the individual competition.
