Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan commented on Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's statement about the need to close the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant. According to the head of government, the termination of the plant's operation is indeed stipulated by international agreements previously concluded by Armenia.
At the same time, the country's energy policy may seriously change due to the emergence of new large consumers. In particular, investors' plans to create enterprises in the field of artificial intelligence, including the Firebird AI factory in Hrazdan, require additional generating capacities.
Pashinyan stated that Armenia's strategic goal is to achieve full energy independence through the development of solar generation and energy storage systems. However, independence does not mean abandoning international electricity trade.
Yerevan allows both the export and import of electricity and does not rule out cooperation with Azerbaijan and Turkey. Thus, after the termination of the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant's operation, Armenia intends to simultaneously develop its own generation and maintain the possibility of receiving electricity from neighboring countries.
