Armenia and the Czech Republic are discussing cooperation in the field of storage and subsequent reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel from the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant. According to President Vahagn Khachaturyan, the parties are considering the possibility of using the relevant infrastructure and capabilities of the Czech Republic for fuel storage. Yerevan considers this issue important and intends to continue negotiations.
The current operation of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant is permitted for another five years – until 2031. After that, the plant's operational period, according to the president, will likely be extended for another five years. This means that the problem of spent fuel management will remain relevant throughout the entire period of the plant's further operation.
During Khachaturyan's official visit to the Czech Republic on September 2-4, the parties also discussed the exchange of experience in nuclear energy and energy security. In addition, professional ties and joint programs were discussed. According to the President of Armenia, agreements on the use of Czech capabilities for fuel storage may be reached in the future.
