Yerevan Prepares a Quiet Transport Revolution: 250 Electric Buses to Hit the Roads

The city intends to replace HIGER and GAZelle-city, and purchases may start as early as 2026 with ADB support

The Yerevan Municipality plans to complete consultations on the program for the purchase of 250 articulated electric buses, 18 meters long, in May 2026. This was announced at a working meeting by the mayor's advisor, Annetta Babayan, who clarified that this is a major infrastructure project involving international partners.

According to her, within the framework of the investment program with the participation of the Asian Development Bank, an international tender has already been held and a consulting company has been engaged. It is now preparing a full package of documents necessary to start negotiations on a credit line and consideration of the project by the Public Investment Committee. The results of the consultations are expected to be summarized in the spring of 2026.

If agreed with the government, procurement procedures may be launched in the same year. It was previously reported that the new electric buses are intended to replace HIGER buses and GAZelle-city minibuses. The total cost of the program is estimated at approximately 98 billion drams, and funding is planned through a loan from the Asian Development Bank.
