Armenia bets on electric vehicles: almost 19,000 cars imported in a year

VAT exemption and simplified vehicle inspection stimulate demand

Residents of Armenia are increasingly switching to electric transport. According to authorities, about 19,000 electric vehicles have been imported into the country in the last year. One of the main factors driving interest is cost savings: cars are exempt from VAT, and their maintenance is cheaper than that of cars with internal combustion engines.

The government is preparing to simplify the technical inspection procedure for electric vehicles. Certificates of conformity will indicate the real engine power, which will save owners from having to undergo additional examinations. "We are considering canceling the inspection for cars registered in the EAEU register with real power. In this case, the property tax will be recalculated next year," explained parliament deputy Babken Tunyan. Thus, owners will pay tax on the actual power, and not on inflated figures.

The charging station infrastructure is also growing. There are currently about 600 points operating in Armenia, and authorities plan to increase their number to make using electric vehicles more convenient. These measures are aimed at accelerating the country's transition to environmentally friendly transport and stimulating demand for electric transport among citizens.
