The Russian state corporation Rosatom has offered Armenia large-scale cooperation in the field of nuclear energy, including the construction of nuclear power plants of large, medium and small capacity. This became known following a meeting between Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev and Chairman of the National Assembly of Armenia Alen Simonyan. Russian Ambassador Sergey Kopyrkin also participated in the discussion. In addition to nuclear projects, the parties can implement related initiatives, including non-nuclear ones.

Likhachev spoke in detail about the progress of extending the service life of the Armenian NPP and discussed the prospects for building new units. The Armenian side is already considering a preliminary feasibility study for a 1200 MW unit. At the same time, Armenia plans to create a modular station, and a final decision on the project will be made in 2026–2027.

Earlier, Minister of Territorial Administration David Khudatyan noted that the country is studying proposals not only from Russia, but also from the USA, China, South Korea and France. The new Rosatom initiative could be a key step in modernizing Armenia's nuclear energy and strengthening the republic's energy independence.
