The design of a new tunnel on the Sevan–Dilijan section has been completed in Armenia. It will be laid parallel to the existing one, and its portals will be located approximately 50 m from the existing structure. After the new facility is put into operation, the old tunnel will be converted into an evacuation tunnel, which will increase the level of safety in this direction.

The estimated cost of the project is €70–80 million. Funding is planned to be raised under a new loan agreement with the Asian Development Bank. The documentation was developed by an Austrian company.

The implementation period is estimated at 4–4.5 years. The tender is expected to be announced in the 2nd half of 2026, and the start of construction is scheduled for the 2nd half of 2027. The new tunnel will meet EU standards, which should increase the capacity and safety of one of the country's key routes.
