The Armenian Parliament has definitively approved a ban on the use and sale of disposable plastic bags and tableware. The new rules will come into force on January 1, 2027, and will affect both trade and the catering sector.
The restrictions apply to all types of polyethylene bags, regardless of density — both thin and more durable ones. In return, the authorities propose a transition to reusable solutions, including paper and fabric options. However, there are exceptions: garbage bags made from recycled materials, plastic bottles with lids, and packaging for products such as meat, oil, and cereals are allowed.
Violation of the requirements entails liability: in the first instance, the business will receive a warning, and in the second instance, a fine of 100,000 to 150,000 drams (approximately $260–400). The new rules are aimed at reducing plastic waste and reducing the burden on the environment.
