Mayor Demands Modern Plant That Will "Eat" All of Yerevan's Garbage

Avinyan Against Landfill

The waste infrastructure project has sparked a strong reaction — they want to replace the landfill with full-fledged recycling.

Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan has strongly criticized the approach to developing the capital's waste infrastructure, stating that the city does not need a new landfill. According to him, the priority should be the construction of a waste recycling plant that can fully process all the garbage from Yerevan and surrounding areas.

Earlier, the mayor's office announced a competition to select an investor for the project, which is planned to be implemented on the site of the Nubarashen landfill. International partners, including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the World Bank, are involved in the development. However, as it turned out at the working meeting, the option of building a new landfill is also being discussed, which caused dissatisfaction with the mayor.

Avinyan stressed that this scenario does not solve the problem, and called for focusing exclusively on waste recycling with subsequent conservation of the existing landfill. He demanded that they no longer return to the idea of building a landfill, making it clear that the city is counting on a modern and environmentally friendly solution, and not a temporary measure.
