Armenia has decided on the appearance of future biometric passports: the main color of the document will be red. According to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, the choice is linked to national symbolism – the country's flag features red, blue, and orange hues, and also to the fact that red is widely used in international passport practices.
The new document will feature an updated design: on the first page, a contour map of Armenia will be placed on the left, and the state coat of arms and basic information about the owner on the right. Authorities note that the project for biometric passports and ID cards is in the final stages of preparation, with issuance scheduled to begin in autumn 2026.
Special emphasis is placed on compliance with international ICAO standards, which should enhance the security of documents and simplify border crossings. The government expects that the updated system will also support the visa liberalization process with the European Union and make citizens' travel more free and secure.
