The US Department of Commerce has issued an export license to Microchip Technology, allowing its Armenian subsidiary to use American technologies and tools for the development of modern FPGA programmable logic microchips. This refers to technologies whose access outside the US typically requires separate approval and strict adherence to security requirements.
FPGA chips are widely used in telecommunications equipment, industrial automation, automotive electronics, artificial intelligence systems, as well as in the aerospace and defense industries. The obtained license will allow Armenian specialists to participate not only in individual stages of development but also in the full cycle of creating advanced solutions – from design to testing and verification of microchips.
The company entered Armenia in 2023 after acquiring Instigate Semiconductor and has since actively expanded its presence in the country. Engineering centers operate in Yerevan, Gyumri, Vanadzor, and Ijevan, and the number of employees has grown by 43% in recent years. According to the company, it has become the first international semiconductor corporation in Armenia to receive such permission from the US authorities. The license creates conditions for the further development of the local microelectronics industry and the participation of Armenian engineers in creating products for the global semiconductor market.
