The Armenian Parliamentary Commission on Economic Affairs has postponed for two months the consideration of a bill to amend the Law on Electronic Communications and a number of related regulatory acts. The document provides for the introduction of a system for registering unique IMEI codes of mobile devices.
Minister of High-Tech Industry and Artificial Intelligence Davit Tadevosyan stated that the project requires additional technical refinement. According to him, the initiative is aimed at combating the shadow circulation of mobile phones and resolving fiscal issues. It is proposed to create a separate organization with the participation of telecommunication operators, which will administer the IMEI code database.

The system should allow identifying devices officially imported and used in Armenia, as well as applying legally stipulated measures to phones that do not meet the established requirements. The Minister noted that technical clarifications and the preparation of a new version may take up to two months. Opposition representatives also proposed submitting their comments on the document in writing.
