Yerevan is preparing a transport reform: the city may begin to be "unloaded" by limiting cars

Authorities plan large-scale changes to the traffic system with an emphasis on public transport

Yerevan City Hall has begun developing a comprehensive transport system reform, which may include measures to limit the use of personal cars. According to Mayor Tigran Avinyan, fundamental changes will begin to be implemented in 2027 after the completion of traffic flow analysis and the accumulation of statistical data.

Currently, a pilot stage of traffic monitoring at the entrances to the capital has already been launched in the city. The authorities record the number of cars entering Yerevan daily, and also study the routes and congestion of key directions. These data are planned to be used to create intercepting parking lots and transport hubs, which should reduce the load on central streets.

Special emphasis is placed on the development of public transport. The City Hall is considering expanding the bus and trolleybus network as an alternative to personal cars. The first results of monitoring are expected in the autumn of 2026, after which a detailed reform plan will be prepared, which will determine the future structure of the urban transport system.
