In Armenia, construction has begun on the 7.2 km Kajaran Tunnel. The new facility will shorten the existing route by approximately 14 km, increase the average vehicle speed from 50 to 80 km/h, and reduce travel time by about 40 minutes.
One of the main advantages of the project will be the ability to avoid driving through the Meghri Pass, located at an altitude of 2535 meters above sea level. This will improve road safety and free drivers from seasonal restrictions associated with winter weather conditions.
The construction will be financed by a $200 million loan from the Eurasian Stabilization and Development Fund and co-financing from the Armenian government amounting to approximately $195 million. The project is planned to be completed within 6 years after the start of work.
In addition to the tunnel itself, the project includes the construction of about 4 km of access roads. Inside the tunnel, there will be 2 lanes of traffic, sidewalks, emergency pockets every 250 meters, and an emergency exit, which should ensure a high level of safety during operation.
