Authorities are preparing changes to the mechanism for calculating property tax for electric vehicles. The draft decision is already in circulation and, according to Babken Tunyan, Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Commission on Economic Affairs, will be adopted within a month.

The reason for the adjustments is a common problem: the documentation for electric vehicles often indicates an inflated engine power. As a result, owners have to undergo paid examinations and obtain additional certificates to confirm the actual characteristics and achieve a recalculation of the tax.

After the amendments come into force:

— the power indicator will be recorded in the certificate of conformity, which will eliminate the need for additional examinations; — the tax will be calculated based on the actual power, and not on inflated data.

The new rules will apply to the tax for 2026 (it must be paid before December 1, 2026) and subsequent periods. There is no need to rush to pay before the changes are approved, Tunyan emphasized.
